Because Sri Lanka lies just north of the equator in the warm Indian Ocean, it enjoys comfortable tropical temperatures (typically 27°C to 32°C along the coasts) all year round. However, the island experiences a unique weather phenomenon: two distinct monsoon seasons that hit opposite sides of the island at opposite times of the year.
This means that any month is a great month to visit Sri Lanka—as long as you align your itinerary with the correct coast! Here is how to plan your holiday around the Australian calendar.
Sri Lanka Weather at a Glance: The Two Monsoons
1. The South-West "Yala" Monsoon (May to September)
- Regions Affected: South Coast (Galle, Mirissa, Weligama) and West Coast (Colombo, Bentota, Negombo).
- Where to Go Instead: The East Coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee, Pasikudah) is completely dry, hot, and sunny with calm, turquoise waters and world-class right-hand surf point breaks! Also ideal for the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla) and Minneriya National Park.
2. The North-East "Maha" Monsoon (October to November)
- Regions Affected: North and East coasts. October and November represent the inter-monsoonal transition period with occasional afternoon tropical showers island-wide.

What About the Central Hill Country (Nuwara Eliya & Ella)?
The central highlands sit between 1,000m and 1,900m above sea level. Temperatures here are pleasantly cool during the day (18°C – 22°C) and can dip to a brisk 12°C – 14°C at night in Nuwara Eliya. We recommend packing a light fleece, wool sweater, and a rain jacket regardless of the month you travel.
